Africa-Press – South-Africa. A KwaZulu-Natal man who allegedly bludgeoned his wife to death with a hammer, is on the run from authorities.

The man is accused of assaulting and killing his 26-year-old wife, Zibuyile Ngubeni, with a two-pound (almost 1kg) hammer, KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said on Monday.

Khoza has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspect, after the incident in Emmuas, Mhlathizi village, in Bergville.

“It is alleged that the man fled the scene after killing his wife. However, he continues to threaten her family members through phone calls. The motive for the murder has not yet been established. The deceased is survived by her young children,” Khoza said.

The MEC conveyed her condolences to the family, adding that the Ngubeni’s family was still trying to recover from the shooting of another daughter.

She said: “It is truly unfortunate and disturbing to us as a province that such an atrocity occurred when the family was still recovering from a similar incident, when they lost another daughter who was shot and killed by a boyfriend in the family yard. This family has experienced so much pain and the killers have not been arrested.”

She said the failure to arrest the accused from the first incident still left many unanswered questions for Ngubeni’s family.

Khoza called on law enforcement agencies to work around the clock to find Ngubeni’s husband.

She said:

The continued murder of women was unacceptable, Khoza added.

“It is even worse when you consider that Ngubeni left a young child. The murder of women leaves huge scars on children who have to grow without mothers.”

She called on the members of the community to work with police in apprehending the suspect.

“We call on the community, who might have seen the suspect, to work with law enforcement authorities to ensure his detention. We need to bring this perpetrator to book, so that he can face the full consequences of his actions.”

Ngubeni was buried on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said Bergville police were investigating a murder case.

“Police are still searching for the suspect who fled the scene after the incident.”
