Africa-Press – South-Africa. The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government is set to launch a Climate Change and Sustainability council, in a bid to handle weather-related events.
This as the province continues to be rocked by harsh and unpredictable weather conditions, spurred on by climate change.
Thousands of homes and public infrastructure have been damaged since the 2022 floods that claimed more than 450 people.
Two weeks ago, thousands of motorists were stranded on the N3 highway which was covered in snow.
At least two people died from hypothermia.
“In the coming four weeks, I will launch the KwaZulu-Natal Climate Change and Sustainability Council that will create neutral channels for the engagement of a broad array of stakeholders,” said KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli.
Ntuli said a dialogue focusing on how the province is responding to climate change is also in the pipeline.
“Our Provincial Government will host a Climate Change and Sustainability Dialogue. This will bring all the relevant stakeholders under one roof to emerge with a coordinated provincial response to climate change in the province,” he added.
