Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of raping his 13-year-old stepgrandson in Mayflower, Mpumalanga, in 2019.

According to police, the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was found guilty of rape in the Regional Court in Elukwatini in October. He was sentenced on 14 December.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the mother of the victim reported the incident to the police in February 2019, and the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Elukwatini arrested him on 12 November 2021.

In addition to being sentenced to life in prison, the man will be barred from working with children.

The court also ordered that his particulars be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela welcomed the sentence and cautioned parents to be extra vigilant as some of their family members could be sex offenders.
