Africa-Press – South-Africa. More than 15 houses have been gutted by fire following a spate of violence in Gumbu Village in Limpopo.
According to an official of the Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, who was at the scene, the spate of violence is related to the killing of the local headman, Takalani Andries Gumbu, who was reportedly killed earlier this week.
Gumbu, 40, was shot as he got out of his car after reportedly arriving home on Sunday at about 22:00.He was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds, and certified dead on the scene.
The MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, Florence Radzilani, has condemned in the strongest terms, the unrest that took place around Gumbu Village.
Radzilani has called for calm and restraint among the residents and appealed to them to desist from acts of violence that have the potential to spill into a civil war.
“What is more concerning is that the violence has also seen police vehicles also being torched,” Radzilani added.
Police are still investigating Gumbu’s murder. The MEC has welcomed the intervention by the provincial commissioner of SAPS, who has dispatched a number of officers from various units, including the tactical response team, to quell the violence.
“This unwarranted violence undermines the great work that government and organs of civil society are doing to preserve peace and stability in the province,” Radzilani added.
