Limpopo man gets life sentence for stabbing drinking partner to death and mutilating his body

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Limpopo man has been sentenced to life behind bars for murdering his drinking partner in August 2018.

Karabo Samuel Monareng was sentenced in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou on Friday.

The court heard that Monareng and the deceased, Mamaila Mahlatse, had been drinking liquor together in the Mokgomola tavern.

Later that night, on their way home, Monareng had taken out a knife and stabbed the deceased all over his body.

He further cut the deceased’s throat and private parts. After the ordeal, the accused went home, and the deceased’s body was found lying on the side of the street.

During the trial, Monareng pleaded guilty to the offence. His lawyer told the court that the guilty plea was not according to his instruction.

The State led the evidence of witnesses to rebut the version of the defence.”In aggravation of sentence, the State advocate Robert Nekhambele submitted that the accused was dishonest, not remorseful, and cruel. The accused didn’t want to disclose why he removed the private parts of the deceased,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

Malabi-Dzhangi said the accused had committed a “horrible offence”.

Nekhambele pleaded with the court to remove Monareng permanently from the community.

Judge Matsaro Semenya agreed with the State and sentenced him to life imprisonment for murder.

The NPA welcomed the sentence.
