Africa-Press – South-Africa. A security guard was severely injured during a cash-in-transit heist along the R524 near Thohoyandou, Limpopo, on Thursday.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the cash van was heading toward Thohoyandou at around 08:00 when a suspect in a white Toyota Camry collided with the van head-on.

“Suddenly, an unknown number of suspects armed with pistols and rifles emerged on foot. The driver of the cash van and his crew fled the scene while the guard was trapped inside,” Ledwaba said.

He said the gang deployed explosives inside the van and took an undisclosed amount of money.

They also torched the Toyota Camry before fleeing the scene in three vehicles – a VW Amarok double cab, Toyota Etios and Toyota Rav4.

“The suspects also robbed the victims of one firearm and they headed toward Thohoyandou,” Ledwaba said.

The security guard was assisted by local residents.

“He sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.”

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, has ordered a task team to track down and apprehend those behind a series of heists in the province.

“We appeal to the community and stakeholders to join hands to assist in the prevention of these crimes by providing information about the perpetrators involved,” Hadebe said.

Cases of armed robbery and attempted murder were opened.
