Mabuyane Condemns Violent Protests at Fort Hare

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has condemned violent protests and destruction of property at the University of Fort Hare’s Alice campus.

Disgruntled students have set parts of the institution alight and vandalised other crucial infrastructure during ongoing unrest.

They’re aggrieved by the amendment of the student governance constitution, which they claim was decided upon without the input of the elected Student Representative Council (SRC).

The premier says he’s concerned by the students’ violent demonstrations, which have led to the destruction and setting fire to the student centre.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Higher Education said it’s closely monitoring developments at the institution, saying a meeting has been scheduled for this week to address some of the issues.

Academic activities have come to a halt due to safety concerns.
