Man, 60, released on R2 000 bail after allegedly molesting one of his grandchildren

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 60-year-old man accused of molesting and neglecting his grandchildren has been granted bail, along with his two co-accused, his daughter and girlfriend.

The three accused, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims, appeared in the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Wednesday.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the grandfather is facing charges of sexual assault and child neglect, while his daughter and partner have been accused of child neglect and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The matter is said to involve two minors, a 14-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother. Both children were left in the care of their grandparents, but the grandmother has since died.

NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the trio were arrested after it came to light that one of the victims was allegedly sexually assaulted, while both were reportedly brutally assaulted with a cricket bat.

Despite the State opposing bail, the grandfather was granted bail of R2 000 and his two co-accused were released from custody on R1 000 bail each.

The matter was postponed to 16 March.
