Man arrested in Mpumalanga for possession of unlicensed guns, 600 rounds of ammunition

Africa-Press – South-Africa. An intoxicated Mpumalanga man who allegedly threatened residents has been arrested after allegedly being found with nine firearms – some unlicensed – and more than 600 rounds of ammunition.

Martin Frederik Nelson was arrested on Friday afternoon and briefly appeared in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

His arrest came after police acted on a tip-off from residents about a man who was allegedly “acting irresponsibly with firearms”, said police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

“According to the whistleblowers, the suspect allegedly threatened people with firearms and appeared to be intoxicated.”

When police officers arrived at the man’s residence, two firearms – a revolver and a rifle – were found next to him, said Mohlala.

During a search of the property, police discovered more rifles, shotguns and pistols, along with the ammunition.

Mohlala said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had four firearms registered under his name, but only two firearms had valid licences. Seven of the firearms were reportedly inherited from his father, but no licences were obtained by the suspect.”

Nelson was granted R3 000 bail. He was expected back in court on 10 April.

Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, applauded members of the public for alerting the police and commended the officers for the swift arrest.
