Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 45-year-old man appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with offering to use his girlfriend, who worked at the court, to make a case go away last September.

The deal was made to destroy the dockets for a pending “serious” case involving a senior official.

Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson, said the suspect, Zane Bernard, allegedly wanted R1 million for the deal, and, by the time he was arrested, had allegedly already received a R250 000 down payment.

According to Mgolodela, Bernard reportedly told the official that his girlfriend worked at the local magistrate’s office and knew the presiding officer on the case because they played tennis together.

Bernard was arrested following an undercover investigation by the Hawks that uncovered the R250 000 down payment for the deal.

A formal bail application will be heard on 9 February.
