Africa-Press – South-Africa. More than 40 chalets went up in flames at Manyane Resort in North West over the weekend.

What began as a veld fire grew into a blaze so big that firefighters were still battling to contain it a day later.

North West Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism spokesperson Jerry Matebesi said on Monday morning:

No animal has been reported as injured or dead.

Matebesi added that dry grass and wind contributed to the speed and size of the fire.

The Manyane Resort fire broke out around the same time as the one that ravaged Cabanas Hotel in Sun City, about 10 minutes away.

Matebesi said the Cabanas fire started in the kitchen at around 14:30, an hour before Manyane Resort.

“These fires are independent of each other,” he said.

According to Sun City general manager Brett Hoppe, a fire broke out in the Cabanas Hotel kitchen at about 14:30 on Saturday afternoon.

The staff noticed a small fire, which they extinguished, but it had already spread through the extraction ventilation to the reception areas.

No one was injured in the Cabanas fire either, and guest accommodation was unaffected, the hotel said.

The two fires come three weeks after the nearby Pilanesberg Airport went up in flames.

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said an inquiry had been opened into the Sun City fire.
