Africa-Press – South-Africa. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has expressed confidence in the ability of the task team appointed to investigate officers implicated at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to complete its work within the set timeframe.
The task team, established by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been given three months to finalise its work.
In its interim report, the commission referred five South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and nine Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers for investigation and possible prosecution.
Briefing the media in Pretoria on Friday, SAPS and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) officials confirmed that the task team will begin its work soon.
The team has been set up and consists of SAPS investigators working alongside NPA prosecutors.
The joint approach is aimed at ensuring prosecution-led investigations that result in convictions.
Masemola says probes into some of the implicated officials are already at an advanced stage.
“Some of the work was being investigated by other units. So, we appointed the task team, and it’s more of a consolidation. We are quite convinced that they should be finished with their work within three months,” he added.
