Africa-Press – South-Africa. Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reiterated the role of sports in nation-building as the country celebrates some of its world-class athletes.
Mashatile was among attendees at the South African Sport Awards at Sun City in the North West on Sunday, where the sporting elite met for the 18th annual edition of the event.
Multiple Olympic gold medalist, Tatjana Smith, walked away with two accolades, including the night’s highest honour of Sport Star of the Year.
EWN’s own Palesa Manaleng scooped the Media Journalist of the Year Award.
Mashatile said that the event was a reminder of sports’ ability to bridge the social divide.
“Sports has always been more than just a form of competition in our country; it embodies profound cultural and social significance, especially when viewed through the lens of our history and our nation-building efforts.”
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie also delivered a short address, doubling down on efforts to give young athletes in rural areas a fighting chance.
“Under our leadership, we are making sure that rural villages and townships get proper sports facilities, proper equipment and every opportunity to succeed. We want the next generation of sports stars to rise from every corner of the country.”
