Africa-Press – South-Africa. Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), and several other task teams, should have been disestablished as far back as 2019.
Mchunu briefly appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday.
He provided context into why the PKTT shouldn’t exist, claiming it was a temporary task team that shouldn’t have lived beyond six months, let alone six years.
In 2019, the former national police commissioner, Khehla Sitole, allegedly signed off on a work study that should have seen the PKTT disestablished and absorbed into the murder and robbery unit.
In March 2024, police launched an investigation into the progress of the implementation of the work study and found that several task teams, including the PKTT, were still operating.
Mchunu revealed that the investigation and subsequent report identified the following: “Multiple task teams operating without monitoring, without coordination without budgetary accountability, including the political murder team.”
He claims National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola was in support of the implementation of the work study, but took a full year to sign off on it after certain unions delayed the process.
