Africa-Press – South-Africa. Two men believed to have raped a 5-year-old girl at a traditional ceremony in the Eastern Cape over the weekend have been arrested, thanks to the efforts of members of the public.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that the little girl disappeared at the family function at around 15:00 on Sunday.
“The mother started looking for her daughter as she could not find her. At about 15:40, the child returned and her mother noticed that she was not looking well. After questioning the child, it was established that she was taken into the bushes by the suspects and raped,” Naidu said.
The family immediately reported the matter to the police.
At around 20:00 the same day, members of the community arrested a 21-year-old man at his house in Prudhoe village.
Shortly after his arrest, police apprehended a 38-year-old man at his house in the same village, Naidu said.
The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Peddie are investigating charges of rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and abduction.
The men are expected to appear in the Peddie Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
