Africa-Press – South-Africa. Businessman and lawyer Bonelela Mgudlwa has denied any wrongdoing linked to two tenders awarded to his company by the Mpumalanga health department.
This follows a ruling by the special tribunal that his company, Tark group, unlawfully benefited from a contract to supply personal protective equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mgudlwa has now broken his silence, confirming he will appeal the tribunal’s decision.
Tark group is jointly owned by Mgudlwa and Katlego O’hara Mokonyane, the daughter of ANC deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane.
In a statement, Mgudlwa said he rejects the tribunal’s findings and has instructed his lawyers to lodge an appeal in the high court, adding that he believes justice will prevail.
The contract in question relates to the supply of 60-thousand surgical masks and 150-thousand protective jumpsuits during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Special Investigating Unit uncovered serious irregularities in the two Mpumalanga health department tenders worth more than 14 million rand.
The SIU said procurement laws were violated, bid evaluation committees were bypassed, and a supplier without the required license was appointed.
The special tribunal therefore declared the tenders unconstitutional, unlawful and void.
The SIU added that recovering the public funds remains a top priority.
