MPS WELCOME NONGOGO AXING AS NSFAS CEO IN WAKE OF PAYMENT SCANDAL

Africa-Press – South-Africa. On Tuesday, the NSFAS board informed Parliament of its decision to fire Andile Nongogo as the funding scheme’s CEO after an IT system collapse resulted in delays in student payments.

Members of Parliament (MPs) welcomed the firing of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) CEO Andile Nongogo for breach of trust following a payment scandal.

However, they still wanted answers from NSFAS about questionable service providers.

The NSFAS board informed Parliament on Tuesday of its decision to axe Nongogo following an IT system collapse that caused student payment delays.

NSFAS and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) briefed the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on investigations into the funding scheme and the National Skills Fund on Tuesday. The IT system failures and student payment challenges, and service providers at NSFAS finally led to Nongogo’s axing.

“Just last night, the board of NSFAS took a decision to terminate the contract of the CEO on the basis and grounds of breach of our policies and breach of trust,” said board chairperson Ernest Khosa.

But the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) higher education spokesperson, Chantal King, said they wanted answers, despite the CEO’s removal.

“While the DA welcomes the National Student Financial Aid Scheme board’s decision to fire former CEO Andile Nongogo, it is clear that much opacity remains regarding the dodgy awarding of the contracts to four direct payment service providers.”

King said the DA would request the NSFAS board’s urgent appearance before the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, following its meeting with Scopa.
