Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 39-year-old parolee was shot and killed by a farmer who allegedly found him trying to break into his farmhouse in Hendrina, Mpumalanga, on Sunday evening.

Mpumalanga spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the 70-year-old farmer and his wife had returned home from an outing at around 18:30 when they were accosted by an intruder with a knife, said to be Joseph Vilakazi.

“Thereafter, the alleged suspect was somehow shot by the 70-year-old man. Vilakazi is said to have tried to find refuge through the window upstairs during which he sustained further injuries.”

He was certified dead on the scene.

“Four individuals, who identified themselves as farmers, were also present and introduced themselves to the police as neighbours of an elderly couple who went to the hospital to be treated for shock after the shooting incident,” Mdhluli said.

Vilakazi was previously convicted of rape, house robbery, 14 counts of housebreaking and theft, and assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was out on parole after being sentenced to 15 years in jail.

Mdhluli said police were probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

He added a docket would thereafter be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision.
