Africa-Press – South-Africa. As the festive season drew to a close on Monday, police in Standerton shut down two shebeens, arrested a man for murder and fined people for drinking in public under the banner of Operation Vala Konke.

Giving additional details, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the first shebeen was discovered when patrolling officers noticed people congregating at a “certain premises”.

“As the members drew nearer, it was discovered that the alleged owners were, in fact, running a shebeen. The place was searched [and] a large volume of liquor was found,” Mohlala said.

“A 35-year-old man was arrested and he paid a fine as an admission of guilt.”

“Meanwhile, the second illegal liquor outlet was closed after members discovered that a certain spaza shop was used to trade liquor. A 33-year-old man was arrested and he paid a fine as an admission of guilt,” Mohlala added. He said 319.38 litres of liquor was confiscated from the two shebeens.

Officers also arrested a 39-year-old man for the murder of his girlfriend after they received information about his whereabouts in Standerton.

Four other people who were arrested on charges of public drinking paid fines.

Mohala added:

Those who were arrested are expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court.
