Africa-Press – South-Africa. A traffic officer in Mpumalanga was killed on Monday evening after being struck by a truck on the N4 near Middelburg.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said the 57-year-old Gijimane July Nkabinde was knocked down by the truck at about 19:30.

Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said Nkabinde was on duty at the Middelburg weighbridge at the time and was directing the truck to the weighbridge next to the highway.

Mmusi said that investigations into the accident were underway and that the driver of the truck had been arrested and charged with culpable homicide.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has sent his condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of Nkabinde. Shongwe also called on Nkabinde’s colleagues not to be discouraged by the incident, and that they should continue to work hard in dealing with errant drivers, in honour of their departed colleague.

“Truck drivers must at all times cooperate with law enforcement officers because the directives of these officials supersede all other signs on the road,” he said.

“We have noticed that some truck drivers are, at times, not working with our officials. There is a problem of attitude among some truck drivers who constantly disregard the rules.

“The attitude of some of these drivers must change, and trucking companies must instil in their employees the culture of considerate and courteous driving.”
