Africa-Press – South-Africa. A ward councillor in Mpumalanga and another man were gunned down in an apparent hit in Calcutta, near Hazyview, on Saturday evening.

According to police, the ANC ward councillor, Lot Nkuna, 55 was shot and killed at around 20:50 while sitting in a VW Polo.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the body of the second deceased, David Matsane, 52, was found next to the vehicle.

A third person sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital.

“Preliminary investigation by the police revealed that a male suspect who was wearing a hoodie allegedly went past the victims then suddenly returned and started shooting,” Mohlala said.

“The body of the councillor was found inside the car, which suggests that he could have been shot whilst sitting in the driver’s seat. It is also suspected that Mr Matsane could have been shot whilst outside the car.

“Police as well as the paramedics were summoned to the scene and upon arrival, the two were unfortunately certified dead. Details on where the third victim that was shot and injured will unfold as the investigation continues.”

Police also recovered seven spent 9mm cartridges as well as one live round from the scene.

While police say the motive for the shooting was unknown on Monday night, they confirmed that nothing was stolen from the deceased.

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela said a team of experts had been established to “probe the outrageous incident”.

“We are confident that the assailants will be hunted down and swiftly brought to book. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured victim,” Manamela said.
