Africa-Press – South-Africa. The N1 highway at De Doorns has reopened after it was closed due to heavy rains and flooding over the long weekend.

Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto confirmed that the road had been reopened around 01:00 on Wednesday and was operating with a stop-and-go system.

Several other key roads in the province remain closed.

In an update on Wednesday morning, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde posted on his social media saying that eight road closures were still in place.

The following major roads are still closed:

News24 previously reported that thousands of people had been left destitute after their homes were destroyed in the heavy rains and strong winds, with numerous evacuations across the province.

Eight people were electrocuted during the flooding due to illegal electricity connections.

More than 2 500 structures were affected in the Cape Winelands, and around 580 people were temporarily housed in shelters and churches.

In Cape Town, more than 1 500 structures and 6 000 people were affected.

In Breede Valley, around 2 000 people were cut off from access to roads.

During a briefing on Tuesday, Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie said no timeframe could be provided for when all roads would be reopened.
