Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard that close to 300 metro officers in Ekurhuleni had criminal records in 2022, while 100 were awaiting trial.
This was revealed by retired Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Commissioner Revo Spies, who is currently testifying.
Spies said during a criminal record checking process, which was halted not long after IT started by Ekurhuleni officials, they found that 275 EMPD officers were convicted of criminal offences.
The majority of crimes related to assault, theft, drivingunder the influence, reckless and negligent driving, with 15 EMPD officers awaiting trial for murder.
“No illicit [crimes were] recorded and that is a total of 3,174 people. Two-hundred and seventy-five officers have illicit activity recorded and then 211 is still outstanding – which gives us a total of 3762 at that stage.”
