Nersa seeks public input on proposed R76bn Eskom tariff hike

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The National Energy Regulator (NERSA) is asking the public to weigh in on a proposed R76bn tariff hike for Eskom.

The new round of consultations comes after the regulator admitted to a massive calculation error relating to the valuation of Eskom’s hardware and profit allocation.

NERSA now wants consumers to foot the bill for this shortfall, which could see a 10% increase in electricity costs for the consumer.

Energy expert Matthew Cruise said the regulator should be taken to task.

“Eskom had correctly picked up that NERSA had not followed the multi-year price determination methodology. The High Court also confirmed, yeah, you had made mistakes, NERSA. This is heavily impactful on the public.”.

Cruise said without NERSA’s error, the tariff increase for this year would have been more manageable.

“So I think this is leading to the further death spiral of Eskom, unfortunately. Without the R76bn that has to be considered or factored, the tariff increase would have been 5.36% for 2026”.

The deadline for public commentary is 21 January
