Africa-Press – South-Africa. The popular Newlands pools in Cape Town has been closed to the public since May due to a suspected chlorine gas leak. The pools reopened in March after a five-year closure.
Renovations to the facility cost the City R28 million which included upgrades to the basin, electrical and mechanical systems, and the grandstand.
Mayco member for Community Service and Health, Patricia van der Ross, said that the closure comes after a chlorine gas leak in the plant room was detected.
“Work is under way to address the issue, and it is projected that the pool may open [hopefully] on 1 December, subject to quality assessments. The City apologises for any inconvenience caused but assures the public that everything possible is being done to open the facility doors as soon as possible,” van der Ross added.
Ward councillor Mikhail Manuel told News24 that residents are eager to use the pools again.
“Initially the pools [were] due to open in November, but due to unforeseen maintenance work currently under way, the pool will open slightly later. I have committed to communicating to residents once the summer opening dates is confirmed,” said Manuel.
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department said they are in the process of verifying and updating the operating times of swimming pools for the summer season and an updated list will be available on the website early next week.
