Africa-Press – South-Africa. Sbu Nkosi, before even kicking off his press conference as a Bulls player on Thursday, made his gratitude for the Sharks clear as “they were the union that turned me into a man”.
The 26-year-old Springbok wing was officially unveiled as the Loftus-based franchise’s latest marquee signing, penning a deal that keeps him in Pretoria until 2025.
Nkosi has been a Sharks stalwart over the years, but he also pointed out that his reunion with Jake White, the Bulls’ director of rugby, represents a classic example of a journey coming full circle.
“To be honest, Jake and I have a relationship dating back to high school (Nkosi attended Jeppe Boys High). He was the coach that actually signed me out of school for the Sharks before he went overseas,” Nkosi said.
“It’s a full-circle event of sorts. I know the work that Jake has done and I want to be a part of it. It’s a huge motivation. We’ve obviously spoken and come to the conclusion that there are values that we’re aligned with.”
Naturally, the lure of a proven winning culture was also strong.
“It’s always nice to have a full trophy cabinet. Growing up, I used to admire the Bulls putting in their best to win those legendary trophies. I understand the history and the legacy of this union,” said Nkosi.
“Rugby is massive here. It’s almost like the fourth meal of the day. To be part of that is undoubtedly a privilege.”
There was no pressure external pressure on Nkosi to make his move, merely a burning desire to press the proverbial reset button on his own terms.
It’s a switch designed to revitalise a career that’s – by his own admission – has stalled a bit due to a combination of indifferent form and, more frustratingly, injury.

Following a pesky battle with what was described as a gastro-intestinal virus, Nkosi returned to training last month only to suffer an ankle injury hours into that comeback.
Despite being cladded in a smart casual outfit in the Loftus media centre, it was rather poignant that his crutches added an unwanted but prominent element to his appearance.
It’s a picture that neatly illustrates why Nkosi wants a fresh start.
“It was the best decision for me. Sometimes you have to make those as a person,” he said.
“I felt that a new chapter was what I was going to need to get my career back to the Sbu Nkosi that everyone knows. I know that my form hasn’t exactly been amazing and some people, which is their right, have a run with it.
“I want to start re-building here. I know that doesn’t sound very diplomatic, but it’s honest.”
