Africa-Press – South-Africa. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, said South Africa is in safe hands with a “solid” security cluster.
Ntshavheni said the country’s security and intelligence structures were well prepared to deal with any domestic or foreign threat, including a coup d’état.
She said this was despite national security concerns over allegations of police corruption at the highest level, made by KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Ntshavheni moved to assure South Africans that the security and intelligence structures were doing enough to protect the country from any threat, domestic or foreign.
She told a media briefing in Parliament on Tuesday that the priorities of the State Security Agency include threats to the economy and the well-being of South Africa.
“I want to assure South Africans that the security cluster is solid. The security cluster is able to do its work.”
She said some of the domestic risks noted in the national security strategy include the hostile takeover of government, but this will never materialise.
“One of the risks is the risk of a coup d’état. We’ve identified it and we’ve put measures to mitigate against it.”
Ntshavheni also assured Parliament that the country’s intelligence structures would be available to give evidence in the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the police announced by the president.
