Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Patriotic Alliance (PA) is scheduled to meet its coalition partners in the Johannesburg council to discuss options to replace suspended councillor Kenny Kunene.
Kunene has been suspended by his party for 30 days after being found at the home of alleged murder mastermind Katiso ‘TK’ Molefe.
Molefe is alleged to be the mastermind behind the murder of musician Oupa Sefako, popularly known as DJ Sumbody.
Kunene claims he was at the house, accompanying a journalist from his online news publication for an interview.
Kunene has been temporarily removed from both his party and council responsibilities, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
As a result, the position of Transport MMC is now vacant, and the mayor will need to either appoint someone in an acting capacity or select a new candidate altogether.
While the PA is pushing for one of its nine councillors to take up the role, the final decision lies with the mayor, who has the discretion to choose whomever he deems fit.
PA spokesperson Steve Motale said this will be a key topic in their discussions with coalition partners.
“We are engaging our coalition partners in the city of Johannesburg about the way forward and who replaced Mr Kunene. That announcement will either be made by the mayor or by the party, if an agreement is reached.”
Council Speaker is yet to confirm whether the PA has officially notified the council of Kunene’s recall from his public duties.
