Africa-Press – South-Africa. South Africa’s diesel prices will be hiked on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, while petrol prices will see a significant reduction.

On Tuesday, 5 August 2025, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe announced the adjustment of fuel prices that will take effect from 6 August 2025.

Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for August 2025 will be adjusted as follows –

Petrol 93 – 28 cents per litre decrease

Petrol 95 – 28 cents per litre decrease

Diesel (0.05% sulphur) – 65 cents per litre increase

Diesel (0.005% sulphur) – 63 cents per litre increase

South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted monthly, informed by international and local factors.

As an importer of fuel and finished products, South Africa’s fuel price is determined, in part, by international factors and a price set at the global level, including importation costs, such as shipping costs.

The latest adjustment in local fuel prices was heavily influenced by global factors, including lower oil prices, a stronger rand and tighter diesel supply.

Mantashe explained that the average Brent Crude oil price decreased slightly from $69.36 to $69.06 during the period under review.

The main contributing factor to this lower price was OPEC’s decision to increase production and the uncertainty caused by looming United States trade tariffs, which could affect global economic growth and demand for crude oil.

In addition, the average international petrol prices decreased in line with the decrease in crude oil prices.

However, the price of diesel increased due to low stocks in the United States, unplanned refinery shutdowns, and refinery closures in the European Union, which have resulted in tight supply.

This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices (BFP) of petrol by 23.49 cents per litre, but higher contributions to the BFP of diesel by 69.94 cents per litre.

Positively, the rand appreciated on average against the United States dollar during this period, from R17.84/USD to R17.76/USD.

This led to lower contributions to the BFP of petrol by between 4.00 and 5.00 cents per litre on all products.
