Pretoria hit by massive power outage

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Large parts of Pretoria were hit by a massive 6-hour power outage on Saturday (31 January), with power out in huge areas between 17h00 and 22h40.

The city said that there was a trip on the 132 kV line 1 at Njala Substation. This trip affected the following areas:

Highlands

CSIR

Willows

Lynnwood

Villieria

Koedoespoort

Waltloo

Pyramid

Wapadrand

Mooikloof

In an update, the city found that Transformers 1A and 1B tripped at the Njala infeed Substation.

The city’s technical teams confirmed that the root cause of the outage was a fault at transformer 1A, which had to be isolated.

During restoration efforts, a further fault was detected on the transformer 1B breaker, which also had to be dealt with.

The city said that the faults had to be thoroughly tested, repaired, and cleared by specialised teams before being re-energised, which led to the long repair times.

The city apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents.

“This outage affects a huge chunk of the city. Our teams are working to restore power as quickly as possible,” said Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya.

Eskom confirmed that the fault is linked to Thswane’s infrastructure. However, it will remain available to support the city.

“While Eskom’s own system remains fully operational and stable, we remain on standby to assist city officials with repairs if requested,” said the SOE.

Power started slowly returning to various suburbs from around 21h00, with the city reporting that all suburbs were back online by 22h40.

The City of Tshwane has been experiencing persistent and widespread issues with its electricity infrastructure, where some areas are stuck without power sometimes for days.
