Africa-Press – South-Africa. Almost R290 million has been allocated to repair flood damage in the Western Cape.

Local Government MEC Anton Bredell said the funds would be assigned to municipalities to repair flood damage from last year.

“We are grateful for the allocation, and I want to thank my department for all the work and motivation that was needed to convince National Treasury of our need in this regard,” Bredell said.

The lion’s share of the funding will be allocated to the Garden Route District Municipality, with a budget of more than R264 million. The projects that will be funded include repairs to the 600mm main raw water pipeline from George to water treatment works.

In November 2021, heavy rains brought flooding to the Garden Route and caused extensive damage.

News24 previously reported that the flooding led to the closure of 10 schools, as well as several private and provincial medical facilities.

Multiple residents had to be rescued from rooftops and evacuated from their homes.

In Oudtshoorn, projects will be focused on storm water and road repairs, mostly in informal settlements.

The Overberg District Municipality will receive R15 million, which will go towards road works on the Hermitage Road and fixing pipelines in Riversdale, among other projects.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality will receive R10 million to rehabilitate a bridge in Zweletemba in the Breede Valley and repair three pump stations.

Bredell said the provincial Disaster Management Centre would be responsible for coordinating the projects, and detailed business plans were developed for all construction or reparation projects funded through this allocation.

“The projects are also focused on disaster resilience and future climate change challenges,” Bredell said.
