Ramaphosa and Cachalia Address Charges Against Police Chief

Africa-Press – South-Africa. With at least 13 officers including National SAPS Commissioner Fannie Masemola implicated in a range of criminal charges, President Cyril Ramaphosa and acting police minister Firoz Cachalia are set to address the media on Thursday.

Masemola made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates Court earlier this week, facing four counts of violating the Public Finance Management Act.

The charges relate to a controversial R360 million police tender that was irregularly awarded to alleged tender tycoon Vusimusi “Cat” Matlatla.

Other SAPS officials stand accused of fraud, corruption and money laundering on the awarding of the tender.

The matter was postponed to next month where the implicated commissioner will appear alongside his subordinates and Matlala in the dock.

While Masemola is the most senior officer to be charged in this case he remains the country’s top cop, with growing calls for Ramaphosa to hold an inquiry into his fitness to hold office.
