Africa-Press – South-Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was still considering the cutting of all diplomatic ties with Israel and a decision would be taken in due course.
Ramaphosa was responding to questions in the National Assembly on Thursday where the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) again put pressure on the president to take a decision after Parliament passed a resolution last year.
He said that government’s position on Israel hadn’t changed and support for the Palestinian cause was “irrevocable”.
EFF leader Julius Malema questioned Ramaphosa’s “reluctance” to take a firm decision on cutting all ties with Israel.
Last year, the National Assembly adopted a motion calling for South Africa to close the Israeli embassy and to suspend all diplomatic relations with Israel.
“So, I’m asking, Mr President, as to what is your reluctance because that resolution was taken while you were the president,” Malema said.
Ramaphosa said they had noted the resolution and the matter was being seriously considered.
“It is a matter being considered in a very active manner and in due course will be able to articulate precisely what the executive’s response is to the resolution that was taken by the National Assembly.”
Ramaphosa also responded to questions on the United Nations Security Council, saying its shortcomings have had a “disastrous” impact on Africa and the Middle East.
