Sanef welcomes probe into extortion allegations against suspended City Press journalists

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) says it supports an investigation into allegations that two City Press reporters breached editorial ethical codes and the Press Code.

TimesLIVE earlier reported that the two journalists were suspended after allegedly trying to extort money from a person they were writing a story about.

The details of the story they were working on have not been made public as yet.

Earlier this month, Ishmet Davidson, chief executive officer of Media24 – City Press’ parent company – confirmed the suspensions and that a process had been initiated to establish the veracity of the claims against the reporters.

The journalists were suspended at the beginning of the month.

Sanef said:

“Journalists are crusaders for accountability. It, therefore, follows that they too should be subject to the same accountability that they demand of those who exercise power in society.”

Sanef said it was “encouraged by Davidson’s avowed commitment to ensure a speedy investigation” and called for transparency over the investigation’s findings.
