Africa-Press – South-Africa. Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has heeded the call from the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) to meet and find a resolution as drivers in the City of Ekurhuleni continue striking.
The drivers have stopped operating after law enforcement impounded some of their vehicles for operating without licenses.
The affected areas are primarily in Ekurhuleni, where commuters have been left stranded.
This comes as the industry has been in the spotlight for long-standing territorial conflicts with e-hailing drivers.
SANTACO’s regional secretary, Zweli Mnisi, said they are struggling to pay the R5,000 fee to have their vehicles released.
“We are going to a meeting now with the MEC. We hope to come out with a resolution at the end of the day to leave our passengers stranded as we speak, but we had no option but to embark on this strike because of the harassment of this law enforcement.”
