Africa-Press – South-Africa. Police have confirmed that the SAPS Madlanga Commission Task Team is still searching for additional suspects linked to a case involving a senior Ekurhuleni municipal official.
EWN understands that the 50-year-old arrested at his Gauteng home is suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi. He currently faces charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
While police are remaining tight-lipped regarding specific details surrounding the arrest, they have clarified the scope of the investigation. Authorities stated that the case is not directly linked to evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission, despite the inquiry’s own task team being responsible for Mkhwanazi’s arrest.
Furthermore, officials have denied any current connection to investigations being conducted by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, emphasised that the operation is far from over:
“The Task Team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case. These arrests emanate from an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.”
Mkhwanazi is scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
