Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Limpopo woman, her son and two cousins were arrested for the murder and kidnapping of a teacher and his friend whom they had accused of stealing goats.
The suspects allegedly assaulted the two on a farm until one of them, 35-year-old Funky Hlongwane died.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the 42-year-old woman, her 23-year-old son and two cousins, aged 32 and 26, face charges of murder, kidnapping, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Ledwaba said the two were at Hlongwane’s home when they were allegedly kidnapped by the four suspects, who accused them of stealing the woman’s goats on Saturday.
“The duo were taken to a farm [at Elandskraal] where they were tied up and severely assaulted with several weapons, including a hammer.
“The teacher was released afterwards while the suspects continued assaulting Funky Hlongwane. The teacher managed to report the incident to the police,” said Ledwaba, who added that police rushed to the scene.
“Upon arrival [they] found a 35-year-old victim … with serious injuries and unable to talk. The members of the emergency medical services were summoned to the scene, and the victim was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries,” said Ledwaba.
Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said the incident was senseless and brutal.
“We keep mentioning that taking the law into your own hands is not a solution. Instead, it causes unintended results,” said Hadebe.
The four accused were expected to appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
