Sister of slain KZN cop arrested for alleged role in murder

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The sister of a KwaZulu-Natal police officer who was shot and killed in her home earlier this year has been arrested in connection with her sibling’s murder.

Earlier investigations led to the arrest of the shooter, Siyabulela Mbhele, 24, in July.

Following Mbhele’s arrest for the murder of Sergeant Nokuthula Somani, her 42-year-old sister Bongeka Somani was also arrested and remains in police custody.

She is expected to appear in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court on 7 September.

The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday convicted and sentenced Mbhele to 22 years for the murder of 55-year-old Somani, who was killed in Umzimkhulu in April.

Somani, who was stationed at Umzimkhulu police station, was off duty when she was killed.

It is alleged that she was sitting in her lounge when two people entered the house and shot her multiple times.

“The suspects fled the scene on foot and she died at the scene,” Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said on Wednesday.

A case of murder was reported at the Ibisi police station and the Hawks opened an investigation.
