Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will investigate fraud and corruption allegations relating to Project Letsema.

President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the SIU to probe the mismanagement of the project’s funds, wasteful expenditure and improper conduct by employees or officials of the former national Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).

In addition, it will also probe any other person or entity in relation to the allegations of maladministration.

DAFF oversaw the project to assist vulnerable black farming communities in increasing agricultural production.

It is now called the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development.

The proclamation covers offences between the inception of the project and 17 February 2023.

The SIU may also investigate suspicious activity that occurs after this date if it is connected or incidental with the aspects of the investigation.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the unit would refer evidence uncovered during the investigation to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“In line with the SIU Act, [the] SIU will refer evidence pointing to criminal conduct it uncovers during its investigations to the National Prosecuting Authority [NPA] for further action.

“The SIU is empowered to institute a civil action in the High Court or a Special Tribunal in its name to correct any wrongdoing uncovered during its investigation caused by acts of corruption, fraud, or maladministration,” added Kganyago.
