Africa-Press – South-Africa. Six men have been arrested in the Northern Cape after allegedly robbing a shop in Augrabies and shooting at the police.
The incident happened on Monday when gunmen entered the shop and robbed the cashier of an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock, police officers in a patrol vehicle spotted a suspect as he jumped into a Toyota SUV with five other men and their vehicle sped off.
Kock said the officers pursued them but the suspects shot at them.
“The suspects then stopped the vehicle and fled on foot into the veld close to the N14, in the direction of Pofadder. Highway Patrol, Springbok and Upington K9 units, as well as Upington POPS and local police members were activated for assistance.
“Local farmers also assisted SAPS with a drone and a light aircraft,” said Kock.
The search operation led to the arrest of all six men and the confiscation of three firearms and ammunition. No one was injured during the shootout, added Kock.
The six men, aged 22 to 30, will face charges of attempted murder, business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms when they appear in court soon. Their vehicle was also seized.
