Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Student Representative Council (SRC) at Sol Plaatje University in the Northern Cape said it was satisfied with the concessions made by management following protests related to issues affecting students.

The demonstrations this week led to the suspension of orientation and registration.

Israel Mulovhedzi, the SRC president, said most of the issues had been addressed, and that the university had made concessions in meeting student demands, including learning allowances.

Mulovhedzi said the protests were fuelled by ongoing issues of a lack of accommodation for senior students, students not being able to access food, and financial and academic exclusion.

On Tuesday, students mobilised, trying to find a permanent solution to their problems. The SRC protested the following day.

“Three hundred or more students took part in the protest [on Wednesday]. We wanted to be taken seriously, but we made sure that there was no violence during the strike, especially to people within the community or workers at the university,” he said.

Following the protest, the university released a statement.

It said that it “supports the right to peaceful protests and is committed to listening to all student grievances. However, the university strongly condemns any form of violence and damage to university property”.

A meeting was held between university management and the SRC on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, the university made the following concessions:

“Tomorrow [Saturday], we are going to see if the students are sorted [with accommodation], and the food issue has also been resolved. We are on the right path,” said Mulovhedzi.
