Africa-Press – South-Africa. A suspected cash-in-transit robber was killed in a shootout with police in Mpumalanga on Tuesday.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo, officers responded to a tip-off about a group of people en route from Gauteng who intended to commit a cash-in-transit robbery.
They spotted three vehicles – two Mercedes-Benz vehicles and a Volvo SUV – near one of the cash management bases in Mbombela and monitored them.
When the group left the area and travelled toward Gauteng, police pursued them.
The officers instructed the occupants to pull over but they opened fire instead, which led to a shootout. One person was killed in the shootout.
Some of the suspected robbers fled on foot.
Police recovered an R5 rifle, an AK-47 and a cellphone in one of the vehicles within the Witbank policing precinct, Nxumalo said. The burnt Volvo was in Vosman.
A Mercedes-Benz was found in Kabokweni Village on Wednesday. It had been reported stolen in Barberton.
According to Nxumalo, the police’s investigation revealed that the two Mercedes-Benz vehicles had been hijacked in Gauteng.
“The operation to search for the suspects is ongoing,” Nxumalo added.
