Suspected goat thief dies in vigilante attack by residents

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A suspected goat thief was allegedly stoned to death and his vehicle torched by a group of furious villagers.

The man, later identified as 31-year-old Keago Collen, had knocked down and killed a pedestrian in his attempt to escape a group of angry residents.

The incident happened in Mafefe Village outside Burgersfort in Limpopo on Thursday.

Collen was with two alleged accomplices, who managed to get away when the residents charged at them and were still at large.

Limpopo Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers were called after residents were seen chasing a motor vehicle.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that while the suspects were trying to escape, they knocked down a pedestrian, and he died on the scene. The deceased [pedestrian] was identified as Sekepe Kobeene, 30, from Butha Buthe, Lesotho,” said Ledwaba.

Residents later caught up with the car and Collen was stoned and his car burnt while his accomplices fled.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has warned residents of harsh consequences for anyone who takes the law into their own hands.

“We call on residents to desist from this type of behaviour, [and to rather] work with the police to ensure criminals are uprooted and face the full might of the law,” said Hadebe.
