Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Tshwane Municipality wants to revive the loss-making Wonderboom Airport through a public-private partnership initiative.
Tshwane MMC for finance, Eugene Modise, said the city had set aside funds aimed at revitalising some of the city’s state-owned assets, which also include the Tshwane showgrounds and market.
On Thursday, Modise gave the capital’s budget speech for the 2025 / 26 financial year.
The Wonderboom Airport, which is owned by the Tshwane Municipality, has been running at a huge loss for several years, leading to suggestions in some quarters that it should be pawned off to the private sector.
However, Modise said the municipality was not prepared to cut all ties with it as it could still be a key revenue generator for the capital city.
“The airport, in terms of the assessment made, is very ideal for cargo. If you look at the Polokwane airport, it doesn’t have the capacity and the connectivity of this airport, so all the merchandise that should be going to and from Rustenburg – platinum, leaving the country and manganese from Limpopo – this will be their ideal place.”
Modise said the municipality had a long-term strategy to grow the airport’s domestic capacity.
