Africa-Press – South-Africa. A University of KwaZulu-Natal student who murdered his roommate has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars.

Khayelihle Nzimande, 28, was sentenced in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court earlier this month.

In October 2019, 24-year-old BCom student Simukelo Zondi was reported missing. His burnt body was found next to the rugby field at the university’s Westville campus on 12 October. Nzimande was arrested a few days later.

TimesLive reported that soon after his arrest a video circulated on social media, showing Nzimande in the university’s risk management services office telling security officers that Zondi had died because he was a “zombie” and had been involved in witchcraft.

According to a police statement on Thursday, Detective Sergeant Sibongiseni Ngcobo “exhausted all available avenues to prove the case beyond any reasonable doubt and to bring closure to the family and friends of the victim”.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi applauded Ngcobo for applying “all” investigating techniques to link Nzimande to the crime.
