Africa-Press – South-Africa. Two people were shot dead and six others were wounded at a tavern in Malamulele, Limpopo, on Thursday night, according to police.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said it was alleged that a group of gunmen entered the tavern at around 20:00 and opened fire on patrons.

“It is further alleged that … the suspects shot eight people [and] two of them succumbed … at the scene.

“Six of them were rushed to the hospital for medical attention,” Ledwaba added.

He said the gunmen fled the scene in two double-cab bakkies.

Several cartridges were found on the scene.

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered a high-level investigation into the shooting.

“This kind of senseless killing must be condemned, and I have tasked the members to hunt down the suspects and arrest them. I further call upon the community to come forward with information that can help police,” Hadebe said.

The latest police crime statistics showed that 227 people were killed between January and March this year at taverns, shebeens, nightclubs and other outlets where alcohol was sold.
