Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Limpopo man has been handed two life sentences for murdering his girlfriend and her two-year-old son in their bed.
He reportedly slept next to the victims’ bodies before fleeing the scene the next day.
David Matjila, 45, was sentenced in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane for the murders, which took place in August 2021.
The court heard that Matjila arrived at Apiesdoring in Burgersfort while his girlfriend, Farina Mahlake, 34, and her son, Kgoitsione, were asleep at home.
“The accused stabbed the mother and child several times with a knife, killing them instantly. He then covered the deceased with a blanket and slept next to them.
“The following day, the accused fled the scene after a concerned resident alerted the police,” said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi.
Matjila was arrested later that day in a taxi travelling to Hammanskraal in Gauteng.
Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, lauded the investigating officer, Sergeant Thelma Mokwena, and others who helped to ensure Matjila’s conviction.
