Africa-Press – South-Africa. Police have launched a manhunt for five armed suspects accused of shooting two people dead during a tavern robbery in the North West.

The tavern in Wolmaransstad was robbed in the early hours of Monday.

Two men, aged between 30 and 35, were shot and died on the scene.

The tavern owner, 50, was rushed to hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said information at their disposal indicated five suspects were playing pool in the tavern and, just after midnight, they closed the premise’s main gate.

“They robbed the tavern owner after shooting him and took his firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash,” Myburgh added.

She said: “The owner’s wife was hit with a bottle during the ordeal. She was released from the hospital shortly after being admitted.”

Myburgh added after the suspects fled the scene on foot, bystanders allegedly assaulted two people who were inside the tavern as they were mistaken for being robbers.

“They were assaulted by the angry mob, and their vehicle parked outside the tavern was damaged.”

Both victims, according to her, were admitted to hospital and discharged after receiving treatment.
