Africa-Press – South-Africa. Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt for three men who attacked two police officers in Mbombela.

The officers, a sergeant and a constable, were robbed of their service firearms on Wednesday night while on patrol near Ilanga Mall.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the officers noticed a red VW Polo approaching. It had no rear number plate and three men were inside.

After the car pulled off the road, the officers noticed that driver was drinking alcohol inside the car. The men allegedly tried to bribe the officers, but the officers proceeded to arrest them instead.

Mohlala said:

The officer’s firearm and cellphone were stolen.

The men also attacked the second officer, causing some injuries, and stole his service pistol and ammunition.

Both officers were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

“A 72-hour activation plan has been activated to trace the suspects and police are adamant that an arrest will be made soon,” Mohlala added.
