Africa-Press – South-Africa. n light of budget shortfalls affecting schools nationally, the Western Cape government said it would not implement cuts on school feeding scheme programmes, scholar transport, textbooks, and stationery.
The provincial Education Department has come under fire after announcing in August that it would be cutting more than 2,400 teacher job cuts from January 2025.
It added that efforts to explore alternatives to ease the burden on public education were continuing.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said the fight to protect teacher’s jobs was the main priority.
“The pressure on the budget cuts is being felt across the board, and therefore just endorses our position to fight for a fair share of the budget to make sure that we can cover these costs in a fast-growing, or the fastest growing province in South African from a population point of view.”
